Ecobank Returns to Dividend Payments With $40 Million Payout After Three-Year Hiatus

Ecobank Group has secured shareholder approval for a $40 million dividend payment, marking the pan-African lender’s return to shareholder distributions after a three-year gap. The decision, taken at the Group’s 2026 Annual General Meeting held in Lomé, Togo on June 3, represents a milestone for the bank’s turnaround efforts under its “Growth, Transformation and Returns” strategy.

The dividend of 0.16 US cents per share follows a robust 2025 financial performance that Group Chairman Papa Madiaw Ndiaye described as proof of resilience. “This $40 million dividend is a direct reflection of the resilience of our unrivalled pan-African model, institutional maturity and our staff’s skill and discipline,” Ndiaye told shareholders.

For the year ended December 31, 2025, Ecobank reported record profit before tax of $801 million, a 21 percent increase from the previous year. Net revenues rose 17 percent to $2.45 billion, while pre-provision, pre-tax operating profit surged 29 percent to $1.265 billion, indicating that the bank’s core operations across its vast network are generating sustained momentum.

The bank also achieved a record low cost-to-income ratio of 48.3 percent, signalling tighter expense management even as revenue expanded. A capital adequacy ratio of 16.7 percent, roughly 420 basis points above the regulatory minimum, gave the board sufficient comfort to resume distributions without compromising the institution’s stability.

Earlier reporting by Accra Street Journal highlighted that Ecobank’s return to dividends comes as the lender seeks to balance investment in digital transformation with shareholder returns. Group CEO Jeremy Awori noted that shareholders had reaffirmed their backing for the GTR strategy. “Thanks to our deliberate and structured approach to growth, we are bringing value to our shareholders while transforming payments and trade across our 34 markets,” Awori said.

Shareholders at the AGM approved all resolutions, including the audited financial statements, the dividend payment, and the re-election of directors. They also welcomed the appointment of Cathia Lawson Hall as a new board member.

With operations across 34 sub-Saharan African countries and additional offices in France, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and China, Ecobank serves more than 30 million customers across consumer, commercial, corporate, and investment banking. The return to dividends signals management’s confidence that the bank has moved beyond a period of restructuring into one of sustainable profitability.
