The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) recorded its busiest trading session of the week on Thursday, October 23, with over 1.6 million shares changing hands amid a wave of profit-taking following recent market gains.
Trading volume reached 1,606,700 shares, valued at GH¢4.34 million, underscoring renewed investor activity across key financial and telecom stocks.
The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) slipped 69 points to close at 8,378.59, reflecting a short-term pullback after strong advances earlier in the month. Market capitalization fell to GH¢166.35 billion, down from GH¢168.02 billion at the start of the week.

Financial stocks showed resilience despite the overall market dip. Societe Generale Ghana PLC led the day’s gainers, adding 14 pesewas to close at GH¢2.55. Cal Bank PLC declined 5 pesewas to GH¢0.85, while Scancom PLC (MTN Ghana) slipped 7 pesewas to GH¢4.27 amid heavy trading of 781,191 shares.
Smaller movers included Clydestone Ghana and GCB Bank, which posted modest gains as investors continued to rotate between high-performing sectors.
Earlier in the week, the exchange witnessed fluctuating sentiment — with Monday’s cautious 220,174 shares, a Tuesday surge to 1.5 million shares, and a Wednesday slowdown to just over 920,000 shares.
Market analysts said Thursday’s dip reflected profit-taking rather than weakening fundamentals, noting that the GSE-CI remains up over 71% year-to-date, one of the strongest rallies among African stock markets in 2025.
“The market’s pullback is a healthy correction after strong momentum,” one Accra-based analyst said. “Investor appetite remains solid, especially in banking and telecoms, where earnings have been resilient.”
The Ghana Stock Exchange’s recent performance underscores growing investor confidence in the country’s capital markets, bolstered by economic stability, digital trading reforms, and strong corporate earnings across key sectors.
