Dani Olmo’s Decisive Strike Keeps Barcelona Ahead in La Liga Title Race, 1-0 win over Mallorca

Barcelona secured a narrow 1-0 win over Mallorca in La Liga’s Matchday 33, thanks to Dani Olmo’s quick strike just 45 seconds into the second half. While they dominated possession and created plenty of opportunities, Barcelona found it challenging to overcome Mallorca’s stubborn defense., bolstered by goalkeeper Leo Román’s impressive saves. Olmo’s timely finish, assisted by Lamine Yamal, proved crucial in maintaining Barcelona’s seven-point lead over Real Madrid, who have a game in hand. As reported by Accra Street Journal, this win not only solidifies Barcelona’s position at the top of the table but also sets a positive tone as they prepare for the upcoming Copa del Rey final against their arch-rivals.

Spanish international Dani Olmo scored to help Barcelona increase the pressure on second-placed reigning champions Madrid, who are set to face Getafe on Wednesday. Hansi Flick’s team, chasing a possible quadruple, dominated the visitors but were unable to extend their lead at the Olympic Stadium, as goalkeeper Leo Roman delivered save after save.

With Saturday’s Copa del Rey final against rivals Real Madrid in mind, Flick rested several of his usual starters. The coach handed former teenage prodigy Ansu Fati his first start since October and deployed Hector Fort on the left of the defence, with Ferran Torres up front in place of injured top scorer Robert Lewandowski.

Barcelona created several chances in the first half and could hardly believe the score was goalless at the break. Gavi’s deflected shot hit the post, while Torres fired over after Olmo played him in. Fati also fired narrowly off target as the hosts turned the screw, and Roman saved from teenage star Lamine Yamal, before Fort’s shot was blocked as Mallorca rode their luck.

At 22 and struggling for game time at Barca, Fati narrowly missed the near post when he could have tested the busy Roman. Shortly after, Mateu Morey scored at the other end, but the goal was ruled offside. Barcelona went into halftime frustrated but quickly took the lead early in the second half, with Olmo finishing off a lengthy passing sequence.

Fati came close to a second, but Roman palmed his drive to safety. Flick sent on Raphinha and Fermin Lopez to try and finish the job. Yamal should have added Barcelona’s second when the excellent Pedri sent him through, but Roman made yet another save. The goalkeeper showed good reflexes to thwart Eric Garcia and then clawed out Lopez’s deflected shot when it looked like it was dipping over his head for his 10th save of the night.

Roman made his league debut for Mallorca in 2025, and despite leaving without any points, his impressive save to deny Lopez late in the game highlighted his excellent performance. In stoppage time, Mallorca appealed for a penalty when Garcia appeared to hold Abdon Prats in the box, but the claims were dismissed. Barcelona now have five La Liga games left, including an exciting Clasico clash against Real Madrid on May 11.
