Transport Ministry Considers Lifting ‘Okada’ Ban— The Ghanaian government is taking a decisive step toward legalizing commercial motorcycle transport, popularly known as ‘okada,’ by establishing a 13-member inter-agency committee to review existing road traffic regulations.
Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe announced that the committee has been tasked with assessing the Road Traffic Regulations 2021 (L.I. 2180), which currently prohibits the use of motorcycles and tricycles for commercial purposes. The review is expected to be completed within three weeks, paving the way for potential legislative amendments.

“This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to creating opportunities for young people seeking to earn a living through commercial motorcycle and tricycle transport,” Minister Nikpe stated during the committee’s inauguration on March 18.

The move has sparked national debate, with proponents highlighting job creation and improved mobility, while critics warn of potential safety risks. As consultations progress, stakeholders will weigh regulatory safeguards against the economic benefits of integrating ‘okada’ into Ghana‘s transport system.
