The Ghana Revenue Authority has moved almost all tax filing online through the Integrated Tax Administration System. For individuals and businesses, the ITAS portal is now the primary way to file returns, make payments, and stay compliant. Here is a complete ASJ guide to using it.
What Is ITAS?
The Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS) is the GRA’s digital platform for tax administration. It replaced the older systems and created a single portal where taxpayers can register, file returns, make payments, and track their compliance history .
The portal is accessible at etax.gra.gov.gh and is designed to eliminate the need for in-person visits to Taxpayer Service Centres.

Step 1: Activate Your ITAS Account
Before you can file anything, you must activate your account on the e-Services Portal. This is a one-time process .
Visit the Portal: Navigate to https://etax.gra.gov.gh and click on Account Activation .
Enter Your Details: Choose “Taxpayer” as the user type, enter your TIN or Ghana Card Number, complete the CAPTCHA, and click Proceed .
Set Your Username: Choose a username—you can use your TIN or Ghana Card number, or create a custom one. Select whether you want to receive your One-Time Password (OTP) via your primary mobile number or email address, then click Proceed .
Verify Your Contact: The system will show your masked mobile number or email. Enter the full number or email to verify it matches GRA records. Click Proceed .
Enter the OTP: Enter the CAPTCHA and the OTP sent to your phone or email. Click Verify OTP .
Set Your Password: Create a secure password. You will use this, along with your username, for all future logins .
If your contact details have changed, you will need to update them at a GRA office before you can receive the OTP .
Step 2: File Your Return
Once your account is active, log in at https://etax.gra.gov.gh with your username and password .
Select the Return: Navigate to the Returns menu and choose File Return. Select the applicable Tax Type—Personal Income Tax, PAYE, VAT, Withholding Tax, Corporate Income Tax—and the correct Return Period .
Complete the Form: Fill in the required details. For PAYE returns, you will need to provide information for each employee, including their TIN, basic salary, SSNIT contributions, and allowances. The system auto-calculates the tax based on the graduated PAYE rates .
Upload a Schedule (Optional): For returns with many entries, such as PAYE or Withholding Tax, you can download an Excel template, fill it in, and upload it as a CSV file to populate the schedule automatically. This is faster and reduces errors .
Submit and Get Acknowledgement: On submission, the system will send you an instant e-acknowledgement. This is your proof of filing. Keep it safe .
Step 3: Make Payment
Filing your return does not automatically pay your tax. You must make a separate payment.
Payment Methods:
-
Bank Deposit: At any GRA-approved bank
-
Online Payment: Directly through the portal via ghana.gov
Important: When paying, always reference your Payment Advice Number (PAN) to ensure the payment is correctly credited to your account .
Key Deadlines
Missing these dates triggers penalties, so note them carefully :
| Tax Type | Filing Deadline |
|---|---|
| Personal Income Tax (PIT) | 30th April each year |
| Corporate Income Tax | Within 4 months after financial year-end |
| PAYE (Employers) | 15th of the following month |
| VAT | Last working day of the following month |
| Withholding Tax | 15th of the following month |
For the 2025 tax year, the Personal Income Tax deadline is 30th April 2026 .
Penalties for Late Filing and Payment
The GRA imposes penalties for non-compliance.
Late Filing: A penalty of GHS 500 plus GHS 10 for every day the failure continues. After four months, the Commissioner-General can prosecute to compel submission .
Late Payment: If tax is not paid by the due date, a penalty is calculated at 125% of the statutory rate, compounded monthly, and applied to the outstanding amount .
Record Keeping: You are legally required to maintain proper books of accounts, sales and expense invoices, and payroll records. Failure to keep proper records is an offence .
