The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) closed lower this week as market heavyweights Cal Bank, MTN Ghana, and NewGold posted losses, dragging key indices into the red. The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) began the week on a softer note as key stocks posted losses during trading on Monday, April 14, resulting in a drop across the main market indices.
The GSE Composite Index fell by 75.53 points to close at 6,025.40, down from its previous level of 6,100.93. Similarly, the GSE Financial Stocks Index recorded a marginal decline of 1.22 points, settling at 3,061.43. Despite the daily dip, both indices remain strong in terms of year-to-date performance, with gains of 23.26 percent for the Composite Index and 28.59 percent for the Financial Index.
The downward trend in the market was largely influenced by price declines in three notable stocks: Cal Bank PLC, Scancom PLC (MTN Ghana), and NewGold ETF. Cal Bank lost GH¢0.01 to close at GH¢0.53, while MTN Ghana dropped by GH¢0.07 to GH¢1.39. The heaviest loss of the day came from NewGold, which shed GH¢3.02 to end trading at GH¢256.40.
Trading activity remained moderate, with a total of 313,461 shares exchanging hands across the board. The total value of trades stood at GH¢895,020.08, while overall market capitalization closed at GH¢134.69 billion.
Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) led the session in terms of both volume and value, trading 52,800 shares worth GH¢45.01 million. SIC Insurance PLC maintained its previous closing price of GH¢0.38 after 14,970 shares changed hands. GCB Bank PLC, despite trading only 25 shares, recorded a high-value transaction of GH¢153.50 million.
Elsewhere, AngloGold Ashanti and Total Petroleum continued to trade at their respective year-highs of GH¢27.00 and GH¢24.08, reflecting ongoing investor interest in both the mining and oil sectors.
Although price movements were largely subdued for most stocks, the losses recorded by Cal Bank, MTN Ghana, and NewGold contributed to a cautious tone in the market to start the week.
