Pitch Safety Concerns Disputed

South Africa cited safety concerns regarding the newly installed turf at the Theodosia Okoh Hockey Pitch as the reason for their withdrawal.

However, Seif Ahmed rejected claims that the surface was unsafe, arguing that certification was not required unless the pitch was being used for Olympic qualifiers.

“I believe hockey in Africa will benefit greatly from this pitch. There are 25 countries playing hockey in Africa. Only one country, South Africa, has certified turfs,” he said.

He added that the images circulated questioning the quality of the turf were taken before installation was complete and could not be used to determine safety standards.

Allegations Over Olympic Preparations

The Federation President further suggested that South Africa’s withdrawal may be linked to preparations for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

“What we have heard is that the real reason South Africa pulled out of the competition is because they are afraid of injuries, as they are preparing for the Olympic Games. We are here to protect the athletes, but we have no control over injuries,” he remarked.

Notably, South Africa’s men’s and women’s hockey teams secured qualification for Paris 2024 after competing at the same venue during the 2022 African Cup of Nations. The newly installed turf is reportedly of similar quality to the surface that will be used in Paris.

South Africa Competing in Other Disciplines

Despite their hockey withdrawal, South Africa remains active in 17 other sporting disciplines at Accra 2023, fielding a contingent of 346 athletes.

The Games have attracted more than 5,000 athletes from 54 countries and feature 29 sporting disciplines across Accra and Cape Coast.

The controversy adds an unexpected dimension to what has otherwise been a celebration of African sport, with organisers and federations seeking to maintain unity and competitive integrity throughout the tournament.
