Accra has officially been named the Sports City of the continent until the next African Games.

During the 4th African Union Special Technical Committee Meeting on Youth, Culture, and Sports (STC-YCS 4) Extraordinary Session, held on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra, ministers approved a recommendation from the committee of experts to name Accra the African Sports City 2024 until the next African Games.

The idea to declare Accra as the African Sports City 2024, proposed by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon Mustapha Ussif (MP), was warmly received as an exciting innovation by fellow Ministers and experts at the Extraordinary Meeting. Ghana has invested heavily in building world-class sporting facilities and infrastructure to prepare for hosting the 13th edition of the Games.

This feat was accomplished in the face of global challenges such as COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the country, under the distinguished leadership of His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic.

With this recognition, Ghana has the opportunity to capitalise on the available international standard sporting facilities, vibrant tourist economy and abundant youthful talent to promote social and economic growth for accelerated national development. Sports has emerged as a vehicle for sustainable socio-economic and cultural development.

Regional, continental, and even international sporting events could be directed to Accra to foster African unity, integration, and cultural exchange..

Ghana has a huge opportunity to tap into the economic benefits of being known as a hub for sporting excellence. By growing its sports industry, the country can make sure that investments in building facilities keep providing jobs and improving lives for people in Ghana and across Africa.

The STC-YCS 4 took place alongside the 13th African Games in Accra 2023, which are scheduled from March 3 to March 23, 2024.
