Ghanaian boxer John Abaja Laryea is entering a pivotal stage in his professional career after receiving specially branded training equipment from his management team during a ceremony at the renowned Bronx Boxing Gym.
The gesture symbolises more than motivation — it reflects a strategic step toward positioning the WBO Africa Featherweight Title holder for bigger opportunities on the global stage.
As Ghana’s boxing revival gathers momentum, the focus is now shifting from continental dominance to world title contention.

Management Strengthens Laryea’s Training Arsenal
The customised boxing equipment was supplied by internationally respected boxing manager Peter Kahn and formally presented to the champion by Pastor Henry alongside co-manager Ohene Ameyaw.
The ceremony underscored the collaborative effort behind Laryea’s rise in the professional ranks — a blend of international management support and strong local boxing infrastructure.
Such backing is increasingly crucial for African fighters seeking to transition from regional champions to globally competitive contenders.
Bronx Promotions Signals Next Phase of Career
According to Sammy Anim Addo, Chief Executive Officer of Bronx Boxing Promotions, Laryea’s career is entering a decisive stage.
Known in boxing circles as “The Expensive Boxer,” Laryea has held the WBO Africa featherweight title for an extended period and is currently ranked No. 14 in the world within the division.
Anim Addo explained that the management team is now focused on moving the Ghanaian fighter closer to a world title opportunity.
A key part of that strategy includes arranging training opportunities — and potentially a professional fight — in the United States.
Strategic Move to the United States
International exposure remains a critical step for African fighters aiming for world championship contention. Competing and training in the United States exposes boxers to higher-ranked opponents, diverse fighting styles, and elite-level sparring environments.
Anim Addo emphasised that boxing can change in an instant, making preparation and experience essential.
The proposed U.S. training camp is designed to help Laryea understand the competitive culture and environment before stepping into major international bouts.
Technical Endorsement from Coach Carl Lokko
Veteran trainer Carl Lokko, founder of the Bronx Boxing Gym, strongly backed the plan to move Laryea’s training camp abroad.
Lokko believes sparring with experienced journeymen and ranked fighters will significantly sharpen Laryea’s tactical awareness and ring intelligence.
Such exposure has historically played a role in the development of world-class boxers, particularly those transitioning from regional circuits to the global stage.
For Lokko, the prospect of Laryea training in the United States represents an exciting opportunity for both the fighter and Ghanaian boxing.
Experience as the Ultimate Teacher
Co-manager Ohene Ameyaw also highlighted the educational value of international exposure.
He emphasised that experience remains one of the most valuable tools in professional boxing. Training and competing abroad can accelerate a boxer’s development by exposing them to different technical approaches, training methodologies, and competitive environments.
For Laryea, such experiences could prove decisive as he climbs the world rankings.
Boxing Revival in Bukom and Jamestown
Beyond individual ambition, Laryea’s progress reflects a broader resurgence of boxing in Accra’s historic fighting communities.
Ameyaw noted that Ghana’s impressive haul of seven boxing medals at the African Games has revitalised enthusiasm for the sport in Bukom and Jamestown — neighbourhoods long regarded as the heartland of Ghanaian boxing.
These communities have produced some of the country’s greatest fighters, and renewed success on the continental stage has reignited local interest and grassroots participation.
The Road Toward a World Title
For John Laryea, the journey is now entering its most demanding phase.
Moving from continental champion to world title challenger requires:
-
Exposure to elite competition
-
Strategic matchmaking
-
Consistent international ranking progression
-
High-level training environments
The support from his management team and trainers indicates a deliberate plan to position the Ghanaian fighter on the global stage.
If executed effectively, the next chapter of Laryea’s career could place another Ghanaian name into the conversation for world championship honours.
