Its scale is significant, but the bigger story is what MTN is building around that customer base.
$500 Billion in Mobile Money Transactions
As at 2025, MTN’s Mobile Money ecosystem processed more than $500 billion in transaction value, across more than 23 billion transactions. By year-end, the group had 69.5 million active Mobile Money users.
This significant milestone puts MTN at the intersection of two of Africa’s biggest digital transformations: connectivity and financial services.
The Strategy: Telecom as Foundation for a Digital Ecosystem
The strategy is increasingly clear: use a massive telecommunications customer base as the foundation for a broader digital ecosystem spanning mobile money, payments, fintech and other financial services.
MTN also retained its position as Africa’s most valuable brand in Brand Finance’s 2026 ranking, with a brand value of about $2.9 billion.
The Numbers Tell a Bigger Story Than Telecom
MTN has spent decades building the infrastructure that connects millions of Africans. Now, the company is increasingly trying to become part of how those same customers communicate, pay, save and access financial services.
The question is no longer just how many people MTN can connect, but how much economic activity can happen on top of that network.
