Tottenham Hotspur have officially confirmed the signing of Japan international defender Kota Takai from Kawasaki Frontale, as reported by Accra Sports News on Tuesday.
The 20-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract with the Premier League side following a reported £5 million deal, according to Sky Sports. Takai becomes Tottenham’s second signing of the transfer window, following the permanent acquisition of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich.
A rising star in Japanese football, Takai was named Japan’s Young Player of the Year in 2024 after breaking into Kawasaki Frontale’s first team at just 18. Over the past two seasons, he has made 81 senior appearances, scoring four goals, and played a key role in helping the club reach the 2025 AFC Champions League final.

Capped four times by the Japanese national team, Takai’s move to North London reflects Tottenham’s growing interest in emerging Asian talent.
He joins a competitive Spurs backline featuring Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Kevin Danso, and Radu Dragusin. However, there are reports that Romero could be on his way to Atletico Madrid, potentially opening up more opportunities for Takai under manager Thomas Frank.
Tottenham, fresh off their Europa League triumph, appear focused on building a youthful squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
Accra Sports News will continue to follow Takai’s progress as he begins his Premier League journey.
