🏢 Headquarters & History
Location: Accra, Greater Accra Region, Ghana
The Beginning (1995)
Radio Gold was one of Ghana’s first private, independent, non-partisan commercial radio stations . The station was founded by Kwasi Sainti Baffoe-Bonnie and officially granted authorization to operate a commercial FM station in Accra on 90.5 MHz on 3rd October 1995 by the National Communications Authority (NCA) .
Ownership
According to unconfirmed reports, the 31 December Women’s Movement (associated with former President Jerry Rawlings) held 50% shares in the radio station, though this remains a rumor .
Peak Years
Radio Gold became a household name in Accra, known for its bold political commentary, engaging talk shows, and commitment to playing 70% local Ghanaian music . It was often described as “Your Power Station,” reflecting its influence in shaping public discourse .
Licensing Issues & Decline (2000 – 2017)
The station’s authorization expired on 2nd October 2000 . What followed was nearly two decades of licensing struggles:
-
2000 – 2008: Radio Gold continued operating without renewing its authorization
-
29th September 2008: NCA formally notified the company that their authorization had expired
-
2009: The company submitted an incomplete renewal application (missing audited financial statements, SSNIT, and Tax Clearance Certificates)
-
23rd June 2017: NCA issued a Notice of Suspension, warning of closure within 30 days
-
26th September 2017: Radio Gold was fined GH¢31,590,000.00 for operating without valid authorization for 3,159 days (29th October 2008 to 23rd June 2017)
Reprieve and Final Penalty (Late 2017)
After appeals from the company’s lawyers (Bram-Larbi, Beecham & Co.), the NCA granted:
-
50% reprieve on the initial fine (23rd October 2017)
-
Then amnesty on sanctions (21st December 2017), reducing the fine further to GH¢3,650,000.00
Electronic Communications Tribunal Ruling (18th June 2018)
The Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) sued on behalf of Radio Gold and eight other stations. The ECT ruled that:
“A former holder of a Frequency Authorisation reverts to the same position as a fresh applicant when the Authorisation expires and as such Radio Gold does not have a valid Authorisation to operate an FM Radio station.”
Closure (9th May 2019)
On 8th May 2019, the NCA issued a letter directing Radio Gold to cease operations immediately for not having a valid authorization. The station was officially closed down on 9th May 2019 .
