Colombia secured their place in the World Cup Round of 32 on Tuesday, defeating DR Congo 1-0 at Guadalajara Stadium to reach six points and guarantee progression from Group K.
The breakthrough finally came in the 76th minute. Juan Fernando Quintero picked out Jhon Córdoba, whose roll on his marker allowed surging right-back Daniel Muñoz to step up and curl a brilliant low left-footed drive past DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi.

The match was defined by Mpasi’s heroics. The DR Congo keeper made eight massive saves throughout the match, keeping Colombia’s Luis Díaz and James Rodríguez quiet in the first half. Colombia dominated possession with 64 percent and registered 20 shots, nine on target, while DR Congo managed seven shots, one on target.
Colombia had an early goal disallowed in the sixth minute when Daniel Muñoz bundled the ball into the net from close range following a Johan Mojica cross, but VAR ruled it out for offside. Luis Díaz also had a late goal disallowed after a fast counter-attack led by Richard Ríos, with the offside flag cutting short his celebration.
Colombia coach Néstor Lorenzo admitted post-match that the team relied heavily on trying to launch long balls (66 attempts) over DR Congo’s low block in the first half. Bringing on Quintero and Córdoba in the 58th minute unlocked the narrow spaces between the lines.
According to a report by Accra Street Journal, Colombia now sit comfortably at the top of Group K with six points from two matches, guaranteeing safe passage to the knockouts. DR Congo remain on one point and must now win their final group match against Uzbekistan to have a chance of advancing.
