Ecuador secured a historic 2-1 comeback victory over Germany at the FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, punching their ticket to the Round of 32 knockout stage as one of the top third-placed teams. Despite the loss, Germany still advanced as Group E winners on goal difference over Ivory Coast.
Germany mapped out a lightning-fast start, scoring in just 1 minute and 49 seconds when Florian Wirtz split the defense to tee up Leroy Sané, who swept it home. Ecuador protested a high foot by Pavlović on Pedro Vite in the buildup, but VAR allowed the goal.

La Tri hit back almost immediately. In the 9th minute, Pedro Vite capitalized on an interception and fed Nilson Angulo, who curled a beautiful 20-yard strike through Pavlović’s legs past Manuel Neuer.
The match turned in the 77th minute. Super-sub Kevin Rodríguez won a corner and leaped highest to flick the ball across the face of the goal. Gonzalo Plata stabbed it into the roof of the net to trigger bedlam in the stands and secure the comeback victory.
Ecuador finished with eight shots, three on target, while Germany managed 11 shots, three on target. German passing accuracy stood at 89 percent compared to Ecuador’s 87 percent.
According to a report by Accra Street Journal, Neuer made his 22nd World Cup start, drawing level with Lothar Matthäus and Miroslav Klose for the most tournament starts in German history.
