GBC Embraces Gender Equality Strategy Through Equal Voices Project Initiative

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has taken a significant step toward fostering inclusivity and diversity by officially receiving a comprehensive Gender Equality Strategy document under the Equal Voices Project. This initiative is designed to guide the media institution in promoting balanced gender representation and inclusive storytelling across its platforms. According to insights obtained by Accra Street Journal, the strategy emphasizes institutional reforms, training, and advocacy to ensure equal opportunities for women and marginalized voices within the media landscape.

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) officially received the Gender Equality Strategy Document, marking the climax of the Equal Voices Project, an initiative aimed at promoting gender balance in media content and leadership.

The document was formally presented to the Director-General of GBC, Professor Amin Alhassan, on Wednesday, 17th April 2025, by a representative of the implementing media foundation. The Equal Voices Project, initiated by Canal France International (CFI), was borne out of a study that highlighted significant gender disparities in the media sector.

Findings from the commissioned report revealed that women and girls constituted only 25% of news subjects, and there was a marked under-representation of women in leadership roles across media organisations. In response, the Equal Voices Project was rolled out on a pilot basis in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

In Ghana, the project engaged four media houses, GBC, and three other media houses. Each station nominated two participants who benefited from a series of capacity-building interventions, including training in gender-sensitive reporting and women’s leadership empowerment. The project also provided tailored mentoring and coaching sessions to enhance participants’ skills in covering gender-related issues.

A stakeholder conference and consultative sessions were held with academia, civil society organisations, media associations, and policymakers. These engagements culminated in the development of the Gender Equality Strategy Document, which was officially launched on 27th March 2025.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the media foundation representative noted that the strategy is not intended to remain on the shelf but to serve as a working document that can guide policy and practice across the Ghanaian media landscape. GBC, having played an active role in the project from inception, was instrumental in shaping the final document.
