President John Mahama has issued a firm ultimatum to his appointees: declare your assets by May 7 or risk immediate dismissal—a bold move framed as part of his broader commitment to transparency and anti-corruption ahead of upcoming elections. The directive comes amid growing public pressure for cleaner governance and institutional accountability, signaling that political loyalty alone will no longer shield officials from scrutiny. If enforced rigorously, the order could mark a turning point in Ghana’s fight against entrenched corruption and restore waning public trust in government leadership
The President, John Dramani Mahama, has issued a final warning to political appointees who failed to meet the March 31, 2025, asset declaration deadline, giving them until the end of Wednesday, 7 May 2025, to comply or face automatic dismissal from office.
Speaking at the unveiling of a new code of conduct for public officials, President Mahama said declaring assets is a crucial tool in fighting corruption and maintaining trust in government. He described the missed deadline as unacceptable and stressed that accountability is non-negotiable in his administration.
“Kindly do not put me in a position where I have to make that drastic choice. When it comes to protecting the integrity of this government, I will not compromise,” he said firmly on Monday, May 5, 2025.
According to the President, those who missed the 31 March deadline must also forfeit three months’ salary, which will be donated to the Mahama Cares Medical Trust Fund. This is in addition to the one-month salary already required from all appointees.
In total, defaulters will contribute four months’ salary to the fund. However, Mahama made it clear that anyone who still fails to declare their assets by 7 May will be removed from their position without exception.
He also announced a new public portal to allow citizens to report violations of the code of conduct anonymously and safely.
“This is more than a code, it’s a declaration of intent. We are here to serve, and we will serve with honour,” he said.
President Mahama called on all appointees to follow the rules strictly, saying that only through discipline, humility, and a commitment to ethics can public trust in leadership be rebuilt.
