Ghana’s Lands Minister Presses New FPDF Board to Scale Up Tree Planting Drive Amid Climate Push

Ghana’s Lands Minister has charged the newly inaugurated board of the Forest Plantation Development Fund (FPDF) with ramping up nationwide tree planting initiatives, positioning reforestation as a cornerstone of the country’s climate resilience and environmental policy. With deforestation rates still alarming and climate commitments looming, the Minister’s call underscores the urgency for coordinated action and measurable impact. Success, however, will hinge on robust funding, transparent oversight, and community engagement—factors that the new board must now balance to transform policy into sustainable progress

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has officially launched a new 6-member board to manage the Forest Plantation Development Fund (FPDF). The goal is to support Ghana’s tree planting and forest recovery efforts.

‎At the inauguration of the board, the Minister said the Board has an important job to help restore the country’s forests. He added that by managing the funds well, they can protect the environment and create jobs for Ghanaians.

‎The Board is expected to:

• ‎Use the fund wisely and openly
• ‎Bring in money from private investors for planting trees
• ‎Encourage businesses to join the forestry sector
• ‎Promote good and sustainable tree planting practices
• ‎Support new ideas in forest development
• ‎Make sure projects match Ghana’s national goals

‎Mr. Buah asked the Board to move quickly to support tree planting projects, work closely with private companies, and support the government’s “Tree for Life Reforestation Initiative” before the next planting season in 2025.

‎The Chairman of the new Board, Lawyer Isaac Essien, promised they would work hard for the country. “This is a duty to the nation, not for personal gain,” he said. “With the support of all stakeholders, we will succeed.”

‎Deputy Minister Yusif Sulemana also gave his support, saying the Board’s success will help Ghana fight climate change and grow its green economy.

• ‎Mr. Innocent Haligah – Acting Chief Director, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources
• ‎Mr. Zakaria Sakara Ahmed – Member
• ‎Mr. Wepia A. Awal Adugwala – Peasant Farmers Association
• ‎Mr. Stephen Akwasi Boakye – Aidoo Tree Growers Association
• ‎Prof. Ferdinand Ahiakpor – Agricultural Development Bank

‎This new Board is a key part of Ghana’s plan to fight deforestation and protect the environment for future generations.
