Senegal’s Lionesses of Teranga delivered a powerful statement in their opening match of the 2025 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), thrashing DR Congo 4-0 at the El Bachir Stadium in Mohammedia, Morocco.
The West African giants wasted no time making their mark in Group A, with Mama Diop and Nguenar Ndiaye both scoring first-half braces to seal a commanding victory and shoot Senegal to the top of the group standings.

The tone was set early when Mama Diop unleashed a thunderbolt into the roof of the net in just the 5th minute, following a smart assist from Méta Kandé.

By the 13th minute, Nguenar Ndiaye had doubled the lead, finishing calmly from close range after a clever distribution from goalkeeper Adji Ndiaye.
DR Congo’s defense—returning to WAFCON after a 12-year absence—struggled to contain Senegal’s fluid attack. Diop pounced again in the 22nd minute, slotting the third past the keeper after capitalizing on a defensive mix-up.
The final blow of the half came in the 40th minute, with Ndiaye rising highest to head home from a pinpoint cross by Hapsatou Diallo, completing a blistering 4-0 first-half performance.
DR Congo Rally, But Senegal Stay Solid
To their credit, DR Congo showed resilience in the second half, creating several chances. Flavine Mawete struck the post, while Gloria Mabomba and Naomie Kabakaba both forced saves from Senegal’s in-form keeper, Adji Ndiaye.
However, the damage had already been done. Senegal comfortably saw out the second half, making rotations and conserving energy as they cruised to a clean sheet and three crucial points.
