Ghana’s Economic Engine Revving Up: Mining to Push 2025 Growth to 6.2% – Standard Bank

Ghana’s economy is projected to grow by 6.2% in 2025, significantly outpacing the government’s 4.0% estimate, according to Standard Bank’s latest forecast. The mining sector, led by the Cardinal Namdini and Ahafo North mines, is expected to drive this growth, with new gold production expected to inject over 600,000 ounces into Ghana’s output.

Ghana’s economic growth is expected to outpace earlier government projections in 2025, with Standard Bank forecasting a 6.2% GDP expansion, fueled predominantly by the mining sector. This growth projection is a significant leap from the government’s own forecast of 4.0%.

Key to this optimism is the anticipated contribution from two major gold projects: the Cardinal Namdini mine in the Upper East Region and the Ahafo North project, spearheaded by Newmont Goldcorp. Together, these sites are projected to contribute over 600,000 ounces of gold to national production figures by 2025.

The report by Standard Bank, a leading financial services group on the continent, suggests that Ghana will lead Sub-Saharan Africa in GDP growth, placing it ahead of regional heavyweights like Nigeria and Kenya. The analysis attributes this upward revision in part to increasing mining output, improved foreign direct investment (FDI) in the extractive sector, and macroeconomic stability gains from recent IMF interventions.

Ghana’s mining sector remains a central pillar of the economy, contributing nearly 38% of total exports. However, experts warn that growth led solely by extractive industries may not be sustainable in the long run unless accompanied by job creation and social development strategies.

The surge in gold output will significantly narrow Ghana’s fiscal deficit and strengthen its reserves, but the real impact will depend on reinvestment into local infrastructure, skills development, and green technologies,” said a policy analyst with Accra-based economic think tank IFS Ghana.

With Ghana’s inflation stabilizing and investor confidence gradually returning, the mining sector is increasingly seen as a lifeline for short- to medium-term recovery. The government has also launched initiatives aimed at supporting responsible mining and ensuring that new projects adhere to environmental standards.

As attention shifts to 2025, stakeholders will be watching whether this growth trajectory materializes and if it can lay the foundation for long-term economic transformation beyond mining.

Standard Bank’s bullish forecast offers hope, but it also reignites a historical dilemma: Will Ghana’s resource wealth create equitable progress? While 6.2% growth may reflect strong performance on paper, there are cautionary tales of extractive-led economies that failed to diversify.

The government must ensure that increased gold revenues translate into meaningful development—investments in healthcare, education, youth employment, and green energy. Otherwise, the country risks another cycle of growth that benefits the few while excluding the many.
