Seventeen-year-old Nestory Irankunda announced himself on football’s biggest stage on Sunday, scoring a clinical breakaway goal as Australia defeated Turkey 2-0 in their Group D opener at BC Place in Vancouver.
Irankunda struck in the 26th minute, capitalising on a direct counter-attack after Paul Okon-Engstler played him through. The teenager slammed his shot home and celebrated with an iconic Tim Cahill-style corner flag tribute, immediately drawing comparisons to the Socceroos’ all-time leading scorer.

Turkey dominated possession with 63 percent and unleashed 28 shots, but Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach produced a masterclass performance, securing eight massive saves to repeatedly deny Turkish attackers including Arda Güler. Turkey, returning to the World Cup stage for the first time in 24 years, controlled the flow of the match but suffered from horrific wastefulness in front of goal.
Australia doubled their advantage in the 74th minute. Turkey’s relentless pressure left space open on the counter, and Connor Metcalfe uncorked a phenomenal low long-range drive from outside the penalty area to give the Socceroos a commanding two-goal cushion.
The match marked the first-ever competitive senior international between the two nations. Prior to this clash, the teams had only played two friendlies in May 2004, with Turkey winning both. This result gives Australia their first-ever senior national win against Turkey.
According to a report by Accra Street Journal, Australia managed just eight shots to Turkey’s 28 but put four on target to Turkey’s seven. The Socceroos’ passing accuracy stood at 75 percent compared to Turkey’s 91 percent, highlighting their counter-attacking strategy. Turkish forward Kenan Yıldız was surprisingly rested from the starting lineup, entering at halftime in an unsuccessful attempt to spark the offense.
The result puts Australia top of Group D with three points, while Turkey must regroup after a dominant performance yielded no points. The Socceroos will look to build on their historic win when they face their remaining group opponents.
