Salah Sets Up Ashour as Egypt Hold Belgium to 1-1 Draw but World Cup Win Drought Continues

Mohamed Salah marked his 34th birthday with an assist as Egypt took the lead, but Romelu Lukaku forced a quickfire own goal to salvage a point for Belgium in Seattle.

Egypt came agonisingly close to a historic first-ever World Cup victory on Monday, but Belgium fought back to secure a 1-1 draw at the Seattle Stadium as the Pharaohs’ long wait for a tournament win stretched to eight matches.

Mohamed Salah, celebrating his 34th birthday, delivered a pinpoint cross in the 19th minute to set up Al Ahly midfielder Emam Ashour, who swept a clinical shot past Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. The goal gave Egypt a deserved lead and sparked hopes that the record seven-time African champions would finally break their World Cup duck.

Belgium responded in the 65th minute with an instant impact from their substitutes. Romelu Lukaku, who had entered the match just seconds earlier, forced an own goal from Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany to level the score. The goal came exactly 20 seconds after Lukaku’s introduction, stunning the Egyptian supporters.

Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir preserved the point with a spectacular flying one-handed save in the final minutes, denying Brandon Mechele’s effort and ensuring the Pharaohs left with a share of the spoils.

Belgium dominated possession with 53 percent and registered 15 shots, three on target, while Egypt managed 14 shots, four on target. Belgian passing accuracy stood at 88 percent compared to Egypt’s 82 percent.

According to a report by Accra Street Journal, the result means Egypt’s all-time World Cup record now stands at eight matches played without a win: three draws and five losses. Despite taking the lead and performing admirably against a higher-ranked opponent, the Pharaohs’ search for that elusive first victory continues.

Both teams leave with a point in Group G. Belgium will look to build on their second-half response, while Egypt will take heart from their performance but rue another missed opportunity to make history.
