40-Year-Old Vozinha Heroics Give Cabo Verde Historic Point Against Spain

The debutants’ veteran goalkeeper made eight critical saves to preserve a 0-0 draw against the reigning European champions, securing a famous result in Cabo Verde’s first-ever World Cup match.

Cabo Verde announced their arrival on football’s biggest stage in stunning fashion on Monday, holding Spain to a 0-0 draw at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta as 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha produced a heroic eight-save performance to frustrate the reigning European champions.

Spain dominated possession with a staggering 74 percent and registered 13 shots, but they found themselves walled off by a strictly disciplined deep defensive block deployed by Blue Sharks manager Bubista. The debutants’ defensive organisation, anchored by Vozinha’s brilliance, never cracked.

Spain came closest in the 39th minute when an initial shot rattled the crossbar before Vozinha tipped away a goal-bound rebound. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente chose to start star winger Lamine Yamal on the bench following a recent hamstring issue. Yamal was brought on in the 71st minute and quickly set up a dangerous late chance, but Vozinha was equal to the task.

Highlighting Spain’s rising anxiety, midfielder Pedri received a yellow card in the 93rd minute for a tactical foul during a late Cabo Verde counterattack. The final whistle sparked wild celebrations among the Blue Sharks’ players and the small but passionate contingent of Cabo Verdean supporters in the stadium.

The incredible fixture marked Cabo Verde’s first-ever appearance at a FIFA World Cup. The result secured an iconic, unexpected tournament point for the Atlantic island nation of approximately 600,000 people, who had defied all expectations just by qualifying for the expanded 48-team tournament.

According to a report by Accra Street Journal, Spain finished the match with 74 percent possession but managed only three shots on target from their 13 attempts. Cabo Verde, by contrast, registered just two shots, neither on target, but Vozinha’s eight saves proved the difference. The result leaves Group H wide open, with Spain now facing pressure to secure wins in their remaining matches, while Cabo Verde will look to build on their historic performance against Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.
