For Ghanaians living abroad, getting a Ghana Card is now a structured, digital-first process. The National Identification Authority (NIA), working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has rolled out a system that lets you start online and finish at a Ghanaian mission near you.
Eligibility and What You Need
All Ghanaian citizens living outside Ghana are eligible for first-time registration. To apply, you must have one of the following mandatory documents:
-
Original Birth Certificate from the Births and Deaths Registry of Ghana.

Original valid Ghana Passport.
-
Evidence of acquired citizenship (Naturalization or Registration Certificate).
If you do not have any of these, you can use the vouching process. A relative with a Ghana Card can vouch for you, or if you have no relatives, two qualified persons—professionals, clergy, or public servants—can vouch for you.
The Fees
The registration fee depends on where you are in the world:
| Region | Fee (USD) |
|---|---|
| ECOWAS Sub-Region | 55 |
| Rest of Africa | 75 |
| Rest of the World (UK, US, Europe) | 115 |
Payment is made online when you book your appointment.
The Four-Step Process
The NIA has streamlined the process into four clear stages.
Step 1: Apply Online
Go to the official portal at register.nia.gov.gh. Complete the application form and pay the fee. Make sure you select “Ghanaian” as the applicant type. Keep your Registration ID and password safe so you can log back in.
Step 2: Virtual Interview
After submitting your application, you will be invited for a virtual interview with a registration officer. If you are using the vouching process, you may need two interviews: one with a Commissioner for Oaths and another to confirm your citizenship. Once approved, you will receive a QR code via email.
Step 3: Biometric Capture at a Mission
Book an appointment online and print your QR code. Take it, along with the original documents you used in your application—no photocopies accepted—to your nearest Ghana Mission (Embassy or High Commission). There, your biometrics—fingerprints, photo, iris scan—will be captured.
Step 4: Collect Your Card
After biometric capture, your Ghana Card is printed and issued to you. In many missions, this happens on the spot.
Where to Go
Most Ghanaian embassies and high commissions offer this service. The process is expanding continuously. For example, the Ghana High Commission in the UK runs registration at its Highgate offices and has plans to deploy card printing machines to selected cities to make collection easier.
It is always best to check with your local mission for their specific operating hours and appointment availability.
Important Notes
This is for first-time registration only. If you registered in Ghana but did not receive your card, lost it, or need to correct a mistake, you cannot use this process. You must resolve that through the NIA directly.
No cash payments at missions. All fees must be paid online during the application process.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Can I get a Ghana Card from abroad?

2. How much does it cost to get a Ghana Card abroad?
The fee is USD 55 (ECOWAS), USD 75 (Rest of Africa), or USD 115 (Rest of the World). You pay online when booking your appointment.
3. What if I do not have a Ghana Passport or Birth Certificate?
You can use the vouching process. A relative with a Ghana Card can vouch for you, or two qualified persons from approved categories—professionals or clergy—can vouch if you have no relatives.
4. Do I need to go to the embassy for an interview?
No. The interview is virtual. You only need to visit the embassy or mission for your biometric capture after you receive your QR code.
5. Can I register if I already have a Ghana Card but lost it?
No. This process is for first-time registration only. If you need a replacement or have a correction to make, you must contact the NIA directly or wait for your mission to offer replacement services.

Bring the original documents you used for your online application—your Ghana Passport or Birth Certificate. Photocopies and electronic copies are not accepted.
7. Is the Ghana Card available at all embassies?
Most Ghanaian embassies and high commissions offer the service, but availability varies. Check with your local mission for operating hours and appointment availability.
8. Can dual citizens get a Ghana Card abroad?
Yes. Dual citizens are Ghanaian citizens and are eligible for first-time registration through the diaspora process. They register for the standard Ghana Card, not the Non-Citizen Ghana Card.
