Ghana Card Renewal

Ghana Card Renewal: When It Expires, Requirements, Fees and Process

The Ghana Card does not last forever. It is valid for 10 years from the date of issuance, after which it must be renewed by law. Here is everything you need to know about the expiry, the fees, and the renewal process.

When Does It Expire?

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has clarified that the 10-year validity period remains in force. The rationale is practical: the physical card has a lifespan of about a decade, and your personal features—like your appearance—will change over that period, making a renewal necessary to keep records accurate.

After 10 years, the card must be renewed to remain valid for official transactions, travel, and identification purposes.

Requirements and Fees

The renewal process requires you to update your biometrics and pay a fee. The cost depends on the renewal option you choose.

Renewal Type Fee
Standard Renewal (District Office) GH¢150.00
Annual Renewal (Alternative Rate) Cedi equivalent of USD 78.00
Multiple-Year Renewal (Minimum 2 years) Cedi equivalent of USD 75.00 per annum

What to bring: You will need your existing Ghana Card. The renewal process involves recapturing your biometrics—fingerprints, iris scans, and photograph—to update the National Identity Register.

The Process

Step 1: Visit a Centre
Go to any NIA District Office or a Premium/Prestige Centre.

Step 2: Payment
Pay the renewal fee. As with other NIA services, cash is typically not accepted. Payment is made via CalBank, the USSD code *771#, or the CalBank App.

Step 3: Biometric Capture
A Registration Officer will capture your updated biometric data.

Step 4: Issuance
Your renewed card is printed and issued to you.

A Note on Premium Centres

You may hear of higher fees—like GH¢720—for renewal. This applies only to the optional Prestige/Premium Centres, which offer faster, appointment-based service. The standard renewal fee at a regular District Office remains GH¢150.

You do not need to pay the premium fee unless you specifically want the expedited service.

What About Foreign Nationals?

If you hold a Non-Citizen Ghana Card, the renewal rules are different. The annual renewal fee is the cedi equivalent of USD 78.00. You will need to provide your valid passport or other required documentation at a FIMS registration centre.
