Switzerland Vs Bosnia-Herzegovina: Manzambi’s Late Brace Powers Switzerland Past Bosnia as Džeko Makes History

The 20-year-old substitute scored twice after the 74th minute as Switzerland capitalised on a red card to defeat Bosnia 4-1, with Edin Džeko becoming the fourth outfield player aged 40 to start a World Cup match.

Switzerland secured a commanding 4-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina in their Group B Matchday 2 encounter at SoFi Stadium, with substitute Johan Manzambi scoring twice in a chaotic final 25 minutes that saw the game transform from a cagey stalemate into a goal fest.

For the first hour, the match was a tactical stalemate. Switzerland dictated the tempo with 62 percent possession but struggled to break through Bosnia’s resolute 4-4-2 defensive block.

The game exploded in the 74th minute when Manzambi, introduced just four minutes earlier, broke the deadlock with a brilliant finish. Bosnia’s task became significantly harder in the 80th minute when Tarik Muharemović was shown a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity as the last man.

Switzerland ruthlessly exploited the extra man. Rubén Vargas added a second, and Manzambi completed his brace with a third to put the match beyond reach. Bosnia grabbed a spectacular consolation goal through Ermin Mahmić’s volley in stoppage time, but Swiss captain Granit Xhaka buried a 97th-minute penalty to put the exclamation mark on the win.

Switzerland finished with 13 shots, eight on target, while Bosnia managed four shots, three on target. Swiss passing accuracy stood at 91 percent compared to Bosnia’s 84 percent. Switzerland also dominated corners seven to three.

Bosnian icon Edin Džeko, at 40 years and 93 days, became only the fourth outfield player aged 40 or older to start a match in World Cup history, following Roger Milla, Luka Modrić, and Cristiano Ronaldo. The match marked the first-ever competitive fixture between the two sides since Bosnia’s independence, with their only previous meeting being a 2016 friendly.

According to a report by Accra Street Journal, the result lifts Switzerland to four points at the top of Group B, while Bosnia remain on one point after their opening draw with Canada. Manzambi’s two-goal performance earned him Player of the Match honours.
