The United States secured a spot in the World Cup knockout stages with a game to spare on Thursday, defeating Australia 2-0 at a sold-out Lumen Field in Seattle.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side launched an unrelenting high-pressing assault from the opening whistle. The Americans were hit with late pre-match adversity when talisman Christian Pulisic was ruled out due to a calf injury, forcing Ricardo Pepi into the starting lineup. However, the USMNT’s transition threat remained lethal.

The breakthrough arrived in the 11th minute. Folarin Balogun charged down the right wing and fired a sharp cross that took a deflection off Australian centre-back Cameron Burgess for an own goal. Australia struggled immensely with composure in the first half.

Just before the break in the 43rd minute, full-back Sergiño Dest unleashed a shot that rebounded across the face of goal, allowing Alex Freeman to bury a clinical header. Following a lengthy VAR review for a potential offside, the goal was officially awarded, sending the hosts into halftime up 2-0.

Australia made a triple substitution at halftime, bringing on opening-match heroes Connor Metcalfe and Nestory Irankunda to inject verticality. The Socceroos mounted heavy offensive pressure in the final 20 minutes, testing local Seattle native Matt Freese, who started in goal over Matt Turner, but the American backline anchored by Tim Ream and Chris Richards held firm.

The United States finished with eight shots, two on target, while Australia managed five shots, two on target. American passing accuracy stood at 87 percent compared to Australia’s 77 percent. The USMNT also dominated corners seven to four.

The United States became the first team in Men’s FIFA World Cup history to benefit from an opposition own goal in two consecutive matches, following a similar stroke of fortune against Paraguay on Matchday 1. Freeman’s goal marked his first-ever senior World Cup goal on his tournament debut.

According to a report by Accra Street Journal, the result gives the United States a perfect six points from two games, mathematically securing advancement to the Round of 32. It was the first-ever competitive senior match between the USMNT and the Socceroos at a World Cup finals.
