Few gave tournament debutants Curaçao much of a chance against South American powerhouses Ecuador before kickoff at the Kansas City Stadium on June 20. But the expanded 48-team tournament had its ultimate fairytale narrative as the Caribbean nation earned its first-ever point at a FIFA World Cup through a breathless, hotly contested 0-0 draw.

The architect of this historic milestone was 37-year-old custodian Eloy Room, who delivered a legendary, career-defining masterclass with a staggering 15 saves—equalling Tim Howard’s record for the most saves in a single World Cup match since records began in 1966.

For 90 minutes, Ecuador laid siege to the Curaçao goal, never letting up and dominating possession while creating dangerous chances in the box. But time and time again, Room was an utterly immovable wall. He set the tone in the first three minutes with an incredible point-blank reflex save to deny Ecuador’s clinical captain Enner Valencia.

Ecuador registered 27 shots, 15 on target, with an expected goals tally of 3.05. Curaçao managed just 10 shots, four on target, and held only 25 percent possession. But Room’s heroics, combined with a disciplined defensive block deployed by 78-year-old manager Dick Advocaat—the oldest ever to coach at a World Cup—held firm.

Ecuador’s 15 shots on target is the highest recorded by a CONMEBOL nation in a World Cup match without scoring since 1966. The combined 18 shots on target between both teams is the highest ever in a scoreless World Cup stalemate.

According to a report by Accra Street Journal, Room’s performance came just days after Curaçao suffered a crushing 7-1 defeat to Germany in their tournament opener. The turnaround was remarkable, and it was Room who stood at the centre of it—making save after save, diving full stretch, deflecting shots, and commanding his area with the authority of a veteran who had waited his entire career for a moment like this.

For Curaçao, a Caribbean island nation of just 158,000 people, the result is a moment to be etched into football folklore. For Room, the 15 saves will be remembered as one of the greatest goalkeeping performances in World Cup history.
