ACCRA, Ghana — Priority Insurance Company Ltd. has appointed Faris Elias Attrickie as its new Managing Director after the retirement of Mr. Mathew Kweku Atta Aidoo, the company announced following a board decision this week.

Mr. Attrickie brings nearly 30 years of experience in the Ghanaian and West African insurance markets, having previously held senior roles at SIC Insurance PLC, NSIA Ghana Insurance, and Regency Alliance Ghana Insurance. His appointment is seen by industry observers as a strategic move by Priority Insurance Co Ltd to consolidate its position in a competitive market undergoing regulatory and technological shifts.

At SIC Insurance, one of Ghana’s major insurers, Mr. Attrickie served as General Manager for Technical Operations, overseeing risk underwriting for large-scale industrial and commercial properties, including energy infrastructure and thermal plants. He later served as Acting Managing Director between 2016 and 2017, navigating the company through reputational challenges while maintaining financial stability.

He also played a central role in Ghana’s nascent oil and gas insurance ecosystem. Between 2011 and 2016, he was Technical Manager of the Ghana Oil and Gas Insurance Pool (GOGIP), where he led underwriting efforts for upstream projects involving major multinational clients such as Tullow Oil, ENI, and Anadarko. His work included coverage for the Jubilee, TEN, and OCTP oil fields, and for all three floating production storage and offloading vessels (FPSOs) operating in Ghana.

Beyond corporate roles, Mr. Attrickie has held leadership positions in regulatory and professional bodies. These include Chairmanship of the Motor Technical Committee of the Ghana Insurers Association and board positions at the Twifo Oil Palm Plantations Ltd. and the ECOWAS Inter-States Road Transport Project.

His academic credentials include a B.Sc. in Insurance and a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Ghana. He also holds professional qualifications from the West Africa Insurance Institute and the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK), along with specialized certification in oil and gas insurance from India’s College of Insurance.

In addition to his corporate work, Mr. Attrickie has taught insurance at the Ghana Insurance College and the West African Insurance Institute, mentoring professionals across the sub-region.

Priority Insurance, one of Ghana’s fastest-growing insurers, was listed among the six most profitable insurance companies in the country in 2022, according to industry data.

Board Chairman Frank Oppong-Yeboah, who once taught Mr. Attrickie at the West Africa Insurance Institute, expressed confidence in the new managing director’s leadership. The company did not disclose any strategic shifts or immediate policy changes following the appointment.
