GSE Weekly Review: Composite Index Slumps Despite MTN-Led Turnover Surge on Friday

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) wrapped up the trading week from July 14 to 18 with a mixed performance, as the benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) dipped despite a sharp surge in trading activity on Friday. According to market reports monitored by Accra Street Journal, investor sentiment cooled slightly after weeks of bullish momentum, with rotation in portfolio positions reflecting valuation pressures.

On Friday, the GSE-CI recorded a steep single-day drop of 50.7 points, falling from 6,437.46 to 6,386.76 — one of the sharpest declines in recent weeks. Nonetheless, the index remains resilient year-to-date, posting a cumulative gain of 30.65% in 2025.

Market turnover peaked significantly on Friday, driven largely by high-volume trades in MTN Ghana (MTNGH). Over 6.8 million shares exchanged hands on the final trading day, raking in close to GH¢21 million, surpassing the combined turnover of the earlier four sessions. MTN Ghana, the most liquid equity on the exchange, saw its share price dip slightly to GH¢2.98, a 5-pesewa decline from Thursday — likely due to short-term profit-taking.

Among top gainers for the week was RBGH, which climbed from GH¢0.79 to GH¢0.90 across three sessions. Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) also posted a 12-pesewa gain to close at GH¢28.00, while TotalEnergies Marketing Ghana (TOTAL) remained unchanged despite sector-wide fluctuations.

GLD (NewGold ETF) exhibited significant volatility, reflecting global gold market trends. It opened the week with a GH¢5.19 jump, dipped by GH¢2.71 midweek, then rebounded by GH¢1.80 on Friday to close at GH¢364.60.

Other positive movers included CLYD, which inched up by 1 pesewa to GH¢0.09, and TBL, which advanced 9 pesewas to close at GH¢1.00. On the downside, SIC Insurance and Ecobank Transnational Inc. (ETI) dipped slightly, while Enterprise Group and UNIL saw marginal declines of 1 pesewa each.

Despite Friday’s rally in trade volumes, market watchers believe investor caution may persist in the short term. However, analysts interviewed by Accra Street Journal note that medium-term sentiment remains positive, driven by corporate earnings expectations and macroeconomic improvements.
