Senegal Strike First, Zambia Strike Back
Senegal started brightly, picking up from where they left off in their 4–0 opener against DR Congo. Just five minutes in, Nguenar Ndiaye broke the deadlock, finishing coolly after a sharp through ball from Méta Kandé, catching Zambia off guard and silencing the travelling fans.
But Zambia, needing nothing less than a win after a 2–2 draw with Morocco, responded through their talisman. In the 12th minute, Barbra Banda rifled a superb effort into the top corner, courtesy of a slick assist from Racheal Kundananji.
Copper Queens Take Control
Zambia pressed high and took command in the second half. This time, it was Kundananji who got on the scoresheet, calmly finishing inside the box to give the Copper Queens a 2–1 advantage in the 51st minute.
Banda, who tormented Senegal’s backline throughout, bagged her second of the night in the 73rd minute. Pouncing on a loose ball from a corner, she smashed home from close range to make it 3–1.
Senegal Fight Back But Fall Short
Senegal weren’t finished. In the 80th minute, Ndiaye was brought down in the box and made no mistake from the spot, narrowing the score to 3–2 and sparking a frantic push in the dying minutes.
Despite a barrage of attacks, including several corners and long-range efforts, Ng’ambo Musole, Zambia’s goalkeeper, held her nerve with two crucial saves to seal the win for the Copper Queens.
Group A Standings Implications
The win takes Zambia to four points, keeping them unbeaten and pushing them closer to the knockout stages. For Senegal, the defeat delays qualification and forces a must-win situation in their final group match.
What It Means for Zambia
With stars like Banda and Kundananji in top form, Zambia have issued a strong warning to other title hopefuls. The Copper Queens, who have grown steadily on the international stage, look ready to take their WAFCON ambitions to the next level.
