ACCRA, Ghana — Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has suspended the production of Tasty Tom Enriched Tomato Mix, citing serious lapses in manufacturing practices at Nutrifoods Ghana Limited that have raised public health concerns and triggered a nationwide product recall.
In a directive issued late last week, the FDA ordered the immediate cessation of production at Nutrifoods’ facility after inspections uncovered faulty sealing mechanisms, poor equipment maintenance, and inadequate quality control systems, particularly affecting the canned and pouch variants of the popular tomato mix.
“The integrity of the product was compromised, leading to bloating, mold growth, and contamination,” the FDA said in a public statement sighted by Accra Street Journal, adding that “these defects pose a direct health risk to consumers.”

The affected products include multiple batch sizes of the 210g, 380g, 400g, and 1.05kg variants, now subject to mandatory withdrawal from shelves. Nutrifoods has also initiated a voluntary recall, pledging full cooperation with regulators and providing replacements for consumers who return affected items.
Recurring Violations
This is not the first time Nutrifoods has come under regulatory scrutiny. The FDA disclosed that the company had been previously barred from producing the same product in January 2025 due to earlier non-compliance—a fact that intensifies the current concerns.
The Authority said it is launching an internal investigation to determine if procedural lapses within its own regulatory framework allowed the company to resume production prematurely.

“Any regulatory oversight identified will be dealt with swiftly,” the FDA noted to Accra Street Journal, reaffirming its commitment to food safety and enforcement.
Consumer Guidance and Response
Nutrifoods, in a statement, acknowledged the contamination reports and pledged transparency. “Our attention has been drawn by the FDA and National Security to bloating issues in Tasty Tom products,” the company said, directing consumers to return affected products to its Tema office or authorized distributors nationwide.
Consumers can also contact Nutrifoods through 050 538 4429 or [email protected] for support. The company expressed regret over the incident, emphasizing its commitment to high safety standards.
“We deeply regret the inconvenience caused and are committed to restoring public confidence in our brand,” the statement said.
