Morocco secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Scotland at Gillette Stadium on Thursday, with Ismael Saibari scoring the fastest goal of the 2026 World Cup just 71 seconds after kickoff.
The match experienced a definitive shock from the opening whistle. Real Madrid’s Brahim Díaz floated a pinpoint long ball over the top, completely bypassing the Scottish offside trap. Saibari, the PSV Eindhoven midfielder, controlled it masterfully and blasted a powerful strike into the roof of the net to stun the stadium and send the Moroccan supporters into celebration.

Morocco dictated the flow of the first half, using wide circulation loops via Achraf Hakimi to starve Scotland of the ball, racking up 60 percent possession. The second half saw Scotland switch to a higher defensive block, sparking a frantic back-and-forth where Saibari hit the crossbar via a deflected shot and Angus Gunn pulled off a magnificent reflex save to deny Bilal El Khannouss’s header.
Despite a furious final 15 minutes of Scottish pressure—including a controversial, unreviewed penalty claim when Neil El Aynaoui challenged Scott McTominay in the box—the Atlas Lions stood tall to preserve a clean sheet.
Morocco dominated possession with 60 percent and registered 12 shots, three on target, while Scotland managed six shots, none on target. Moroccan passing accuracy stood at 91 percent compared to Scotland’s 87 percent.
The result preserves Morocco’s historical dominance over the Tartan Army; their only other senior World Cup match also ended in a Moroccan victory, a 3-0 win at France ’98.
In the 76th minute, the entire stadium joined in a moving minute of applause organised by the Tartan Army to honor Donny Strathie, a 76-year-old traveling Scottish supporter who tragically passed away in Boston earlier in the week.
According to a report by Accra Street Journal, with four points from two matches, Morocco moves into a commanding position to make the Round of 32. Scotland remains on three points and must target a result against Brazil on June 24 in Miami to qualify. Brazil currently top Group C on goal difference after their 3-0 win over Haiti.
