Egypt made history on Friday, defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties after a tense 1-1 draw at AT&T Stadium in Arlington to secure their first-ever knockout round victory in World Cup history.
Emam Ashour put Egypt ahead early in the 13th minute with a clever header past Australian goalkeeper Patrick Beach. Australia equalised in the 55th minute when Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany accidentally deflected a free-kick into his own net, marking his second own goal of the tournament.

Egypt controlled possession with 58 percent and registered 14 shots, three on target, while Australia managed 15 shots, four on target. Egyptian passing accuracy stood at 89 percent compared to Australia’s 83 percent.
In the shootout, Australia’s Harry Souttar missed high, and Lucas Herrington hit the crossbar. Egypt converted all four attempts through Mahmoud Saber, Ramy Rabia, Mohamed Salah, and Hossam Abdelmaguid. Australian boss Tony Popovic subbed on veteran goalkeeper Mathew Ryan specifically for the shootout in the 118th minute, but Ryan failed to save a single shot.
Despite carrying a hamstring injury from the group stage, captain Mohamed Salah played the full 120 minutes and smashed home his penalty. He has now become Egypt’s first player to score in multiple World Cup tournaments, with goals in 2018 and 2026.
According to a report by Accra Street Journal, Egypt will face reigning champions Argentina in the Round of 16.
