Ghana has lost a true business titan. Alhaji Asoma Banda, the man who revolutionized shipping and aviation in Ghana and West Africa, has passed on at 92.

His name is synonymous with wealth, influence, and bold entrepreneurship, but beyond that, he was a leader who built industries and touched lives.

The news of his passing has been confirmed by business heavyweight Sir Sam Jonah and Nigerian media personality Dele Momodu, highlighting just how far-reaching his impact was.

From Humble Beginnings to Business Royalty

Born in June 1933 in Kintampo, Alhaji Banda’s journey was nothing short of remarkable. From a small town in the then Brong Ahafo Region, he rose to become one of Ghana’s most powerful businessmen.

His sharp mind took him to London, where he pursued higher education in Marketing and Sales Management. But it wasn’t just academic knowledge that made him successful, it was his ability to see opportunities where others saw obstacles.

When he returned to Ghana, he built the Antrak Group of Companies, a giant in shipping, trucking, and aviation. Antrak Air became a household name in Ghana, making domestic air travel more accessible and setting new standards in the industry.

His business empire didn’t stop there. In 1985, he made a bold move by acquiring OT Africa Line, a major shipping company. He later sold it to the global logistics powerhouse Bolloré Group, proving his ability to play, and win, on the international stage.

More Than Just a Businessman

Alhaji Banda wasn’t just about making money. He was a man of deep faith and generosity. He built a mosque in Accra‘s Airport Residential Area, supported countless young entrepreneurs, and provided jobs for thousands of Ghanaians.

Known for his no-nonsense approach, he believed in discipline, hard work, and speaking his mind. He was one of the few businessmen who could boldly challenge politicians and speak truth to power, making him both respected and, at times, feared.

A Legacy That Will Never Fade

With his passing, Ghana has lost not just a businessman, but a legend. His story is one of resilience, vision, and unshakable confidence. Though he is gone, his influence lives on in the industries he built, the people he mentored, and the many lives he touched.
