Energy Minister Pledges Stable and Improved Power Supply for Ghanaians

Ghana‘s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has assured Ghanaians of a stable and improved power supply for both consumers and businesses across the country.

Speaking to Accra Street Journal after inspecting key power infrastructure projects, including GRIDCo’s newly commissioned 145MVA transformer at Anwomaso in the Oforikrom Municipality of the Ashanti Region, Mr. Jinapor reaffirmed the government‘s commitment to resolving power challenges.

“Wherever these challenges exist, we are determined to address them,” he said.

The Minister emphasized that Ghana is currently not experiencing load shedding, noting that the country has sufficient power generation capacity to meet demand, adding that, Ghana has been able to export excess electricity to neighboring countries.

However, he acknowledged that beyond generation, challenges in power evacuation, transmission, and distribution must also be addressed to ensure a reliable and efficient power supply.

Referring to the completion of the new 145MVA transmission supply point at Anwomaso, Mr. Jinapor highlighted its significance in improving electricity distribution in the Kumasi enclave.

He said the newly installed transformer replaces the older 66MVA unit, which had become inadequate due to rising demand.

He explained that the recent unstable power situation in Kumasi was due to the transition from the old transformer to the new one.

“What we witnessed in the past two days was a result of the power suppliers switching from the 66MVA to the 145MVA transformer. That caused the temporary instability, but I assure you the issue has now been resolved, and we expect a significant improvement in power supply,” he said.

He commended GRIDCo for completing the transformer installation, as well as the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for their efforts in ensuring power stability.

Further, Mr. Jinapor outlined plans to strengthen gas supply to support the country’s growing power needs. He said that Kumasi is on track to become a major power generation hub, thanks to the presence of the AMERI, CENIT, and AKSA plants.

“When fully operational, these plants will contribute nearly 700 megawatts of power from within Kumasi. This is monumental for improving generation and distribution,” he noted.
