After weeks of pause, the National Identification Authority (NIA) is back in action, officially resuming the issuance of Ghana Cards in the Greater Accra Region today, April 7, 2025. This move is expected to clear the backlog of applicants and ease tensions surrounding delayed registrations

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced that beginning Monday, 7th April 2025, it will commence the issuance of printed backlog and first-time registration of Ghana Cards at all its District Offices in the Greater Accra Region.

This exercise forms part of the Authority’s renewed efforts to ensure that every eligible Ghanaian is registered and possesses the Ghana Card, the country’s primary form of identification.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, the NIA assured applicants who have been awaiting their cards since June 2023 that the process will officially resume from Monday.

“All Ghanaians who applied for the first issuance, replacement, or update of personal records from June 2023 in Greater Accra and have not yet received their cards are assured that, effective Monday, 7th April 2025, the issuance of the Ghana Cards will begin at the respective District Offices where they registered,” the statement read.

The Authority also encouraged all Ghanaians aged 15 years and above who have not yet registered to take advantage of this opportunity and visit any NIA District Office within the Greater Accra Region for first-time registration.

According to the NIA, both the issuance of the printed backlog and new registration services are entirely free of charge.

“The public is urged to report any NIA staff who demands a fee in exchange for these services,” the Authority cautioned.

While new registrations and issuance remain free, the NIA clarified that services such as card replacement and updates to personal records are still subject to applicable fees.

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all Ghanaians are adequately identified under the national system.

“The National Identification Authority remains committed to ensuring that all Ghanaians possess the Ghana Card for the purposes of identification,” the statement concluded.
