Ghanaians may soon enjoy reduced transport fares as the government signals steps to engage transport operators in the country.
This engagement is in response to falling fuel prices which is expected to support the country’s ongoing efforts to tame inflation.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Kwahu Business Forum, Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Darko Nyarko, expressed optimism about the economic trajectory of downward inflation and reducing fuel prices at the pumps.

He says the government is determined to ensure that the gains translate into direct benefits for ordinary citizens.
“As a government, we have committed and have started bringing down inflation. In fact, we are hoping that with the next inflation announcement, we see a significant improvement,” he said.
Fuel prices, one of the major cost drivers in the transport sector have seen a steady decline in recent weeks, raising hopes for a potential adjustment in commercial transport fares. The Deputy Minister assured that government is not leaving this development to chance and will soon begin formal discussions with transport unions.

“We are seeing that fuel prices are also going down. In the next couple of weeks, we’ll have to engage transport operators so that they will also bring down lorry fares,” he added.
A successful dialogue leading to fare reductions would provide immediate relief to millions of commuters across the country while contributing to a broader disinflationary effect and reduce the cost of goods and services influenced by transportation cost.
Thomas Ampem Nyarko noted that such moves form part of a wider government strategy to consolidate recent economic gains and improve living conditions for Ghanaians. He stressed that lower transport fares will not only ease the burden on households but will also reinforce price stability, enhance business confidence, and strengthen national recovery efforts.

“Once all these happen, it will have a positive impact on inflation, and it will help us as a country,” he affirmed.
The announcement is already sparking hope among the public, especially for low-income earners and daily commuters who have borne the brunt of rising transport costs in recent years.
