Passing your licensing examination is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of a regulated professional life. In Ghana, every nurse, midwife, and nurse assistant must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, hold a valid Personal Identification Number (PIN) or Auxiliary Identification Number (AIN), and renew it annually. Practising without a valid licence is a criminal offence. Here is the complete guide to getting registered, staying registered, and renewing your PIN or AIN.
Part 1: Registration for Locally Trained Nurses and Midwives
The Process After Passing Your Exams
If you trained in Ghana and passed the N&MC licensing examination, your registration follows a specific sequence :
Step 1: Go to your Regional Office. Visit the Council’s Regional Office in the region where your training institution is located. This is where you begin the registration process.

Step 2: Present your Results Slip. Bring the letter or slip from the Council indicating that you passed the licensing examination. You will complete a Registration Form and pay a non-refundable registration fee.
Step 3: Receive your Provisional Documents. You will be issued a Log Book for your rotation and a Provisional License along with a code for National Service registration.
Step 4: Complete Rotation/National Service. After completing your rotation or National Service, return the Log Book and Provisional License to the Regional Office where you registered.
Step 5: Await your PIN and Certificate. Once the Council confirms your completion, you will be issued your Professional Identification Number (PIN) (for nurses and midwives) or Auxiliary Identification Number (AIN) (for nurse assistants), along with your Certificate of Registration.
What Your PIN or AIN Means
Your PIN confirms your professional status. No employer will employ a nurse, midwife, or nurse assistant without a valid PIN or AIN. It is an offence to practise without one under Section 73(d) of the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act, 2013 (Act 857) .
Part 2: Registration for Foreign-Trained Nurses and Midwives
Foreign-trained practitioners who wish to practise permanently in Ghana must satisfy additional requirements and pass a licensing examination.
Eligibility Requirements
You must submit the following documents to the Council :
-
Transcript of training (forwarded directly to the Council)
-
Three passport-sized photographs (white background, white shirt)
-
Copy of Birth Certificate
-
Photocopies of Professional Certificates (originals presented for inspection)
-
Marriage certificate (where applicable)
-
Two testimonials from previous or current employers where you have practised for at least one year
-
Copy of your last appointment letter
-
Verification of registration from your original Council or Board
-
Certificate of proficiency in English from an approved language school (for applicants from non-English speaking countries)
Documents in languages other than English must be translated, with a copy of the original attached.
The Examination and Orientation
Once your documents are assessed and you are deemed eligible, you will sit for a written licensing examination, held twice a year in June and December .
After passing the written examination, you must :
-
Complete registration forms and pay the licensing fee.
-
Undergo a three-month practical orientation programme in a Teaching, Regional, or accredited hospital.
-
Be registered to practise based on satisfactory performance during the orientation.
A provisional license for newly qualified foreign-trained nurses and midwives attracts a separate fee.
Modern Pathway: DataFlow Verification
The Council has partnered with DataFlow Group for primary source verification of credentials for foreign-trained applicants. The process now involves :
-
Apply to DataFlow for credential verification (educational degrees, transcripts, professional experience, existing licences, and Good Standing Certificate). This takes approximately 15–25 days and costs between USD 200–350.
-
Subscribe to WCEA for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses.
-
Email the N&MC at [email protected] with your DataFlow report and WCEA subscription proof.
-
Receive N&MC’s response within two working days outlining the next steps.
Depending on your qualifications, you may be required to complete either a two-week orientation (for members of GDNA or GNA UK) or a 90-day orientation plus the licensing examination (for others) .
Part 3: Nurse Licence Renewal (PIN/AIN Renewal)
The Annual Requirement
A PIN or AIN, once issued, expires after twelve calendar months. Renewal is mandatory every year. Practising with an expired PIN or AIN is an offence under Act 857, punishable by a fine of up to GHS 60,000, imprisonment for up to ten years, or both .
CPD Points Requirement
Renewal is conditional on accumulating the required Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points. The minimum points vary by rank :
| Category | Minimum CPD Points |
|---|---|
| Nurse Assistants (CHN, EN, NAC, NAP) | 10 |
| Staff Nurses/Staff Midwives up to Nursing/Midwifery Officers | 15 |
| Senior Nursing/Midwifery Officers, Health Tutors, Assistant Lecturers and above | 20 |
Note: Some N&MC publications cite different point thresholds (e.g., 15 for auxiliaries, 20 for staff, 25–30 for senior grades). The figures above reflect the most recent GRNMA newsletter guidance. Always confirm the current requirement on the NMC portal .
Required Documents for Renewal
You must submit :
-
Proof of accumulated CPD points
-
Two current passport-sized photographs in prescribed uniform: white background for nurses and midwives, red background for nurse assistants
The Renewal Process (Online Portal)
The N&MC has digitised the renewal process. The steps are :
Step 1: Register on the NMC Practitioner Portal at nmi.nmc.gov.gh:9083/portal/register. Provide your PIN/AIN, registration number, a valid email, and a password.
Step 2: Authenticate and Update Profile. Log in, go to “NMC Update,” and complete all fields in your Personal Profile.
Step 3: Acquire CPD Points. Download the WCEA app (Google Play or Apple App Store), register with the same details, and complete NMC-approved CPD modules. You need at least 70% proficiency to secure points.
Step 4: Synchronise CPD Points. Return to the NMC portal, select “CPD Points Accumulation,” and confirm that your WCEA points have been imported.
Step 5: Generate Invoice and Pay. Select “Renewal” > “Process Invoice,” choose your PIN/AIN and period, and note the invoice number. Pay via the USSD code *222# (select “Payment/Invoice” and enter the invoice number).
Step 6: Confirm Payment and Finalise. Re-login, select “Payments” > “Check Payment” to confirm. Then go to “Renewal,” enter your registration number, and affirm. Your renewed credentials will be visible on your dashboard.
