NAPLES — Italian champions Napoli have completed one of the most high-profile signings of the summer transfer window, securing Kevin De Bruyne on a free transfer following his departure from Manchester City.
The announcement came via club president Aurelio De Laurentiis, who posted a photo on social media of himself shaking hands with the Belgian midfielder, accompanied by the caption: “Welcome Kevin!”
De Bruyne, 33, arrives in Naples after a decorated decade at City, where he won six Premier League titles, multiple domestic cups, and the 2023 UEFA Champions League under manager Pep Guardiola. Though injuries limited his impact in recent seasons, De Bruyne’s reputation as one of Europe’s elite playmakers remains intact.

Reunion and Reinforcement
De Bruyne is expected to reunite with international teammate Romelu Lukaku — himself a new addition to the Napoli side — and join former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay, as part of manager Antonio Conte’s midfield rebuild. The Belgian has reportedly signed a two-year contract with an option for a third year, signaling a medium-term commitment to the Partenopei’s ambitions both in Serie A and on the continental stage.
“This is not just a headline signing — it’s a signal that Napoli is serious about defending the Scudetto while contending in Europe,” said a Serie A analyst based in Milan.
From Manchester Royalty to Southern Italy
De Bruyne leaves behind a club where he defined an era. Across ten seasons at the Etihad, he made 358 appearances, scoring 96 goals and contributing over 150 assists. A two-time PFA Player of the Year and the creative engine of one of the most dominant sides in English football history, his legacy in the Premier League is secure.
But his final years in Manchester were marred by recurring hamstring injuries, including a setback in the opening weeks of the 2023/24 campaign that sidelined him for several months. Despite that, he returned late in the season to contribute during City’s title run-in, before opting to leave on a free transfer at the end of his contract.
Napoli’s European Ambition
Napoli’s move for De Bruyne underscores a strategic shift in how the club is positioning itself post-title. After clinching the Scudetto on the final day of the season, edging out Inter Milan in a tightly contested campaign, Conte’s squad now faces the additional burden of Champions League fixtures, having been absent from European football this past season.
The expanded UEFA Champions League format, coupled with rising competition in Serie A, means squad depth and experience will be crucial. In De Bruyne, Napoli gains not just technical brilliance, but leadership and deep European pedigree.
“You don’t sign Kevin De Bruyne to warm the bench,” noted an SKB Journal commentator. “You sign him to lead a midfield, to dictate games, and to carry you deep into Europe.”
