Ghana’s central bank is doubling down on gold. The Bank of Ghana’s gold reserves hit a record 36 tonnes in August 2025, with a market value of $3.17 billion — the largest stockpile in the nation’s history.
The increase from 34.4 tonnes in July (worth $2.91 billion) marks a 4.7% rise in volume and an 8.9% bump in value month-on-month. Over the past two months alone, the Bank has added 3 tonnes to its reserves, boosting their dollar value by $250 million.
Year-on-Year Surge
Compared to August 2024, when reserves were just 27.2 tonnes ($1.78 billion), the latest figures represent a 32% jump in volume and a staggering 78% surge in value over 12 months.

June 2025 reserves stood at 33 tonnes, rising to 34.4 tonnes in July, before breaking past the 36-tonne mark in August.
Why It Matters
The accumulation strengthens Ghana’s monetary position and arms the Bank of Ghana with a bigger buffer against external shocks. Higher reserves not only reinforce investor confidence in the cedi but also improve Ghana’s ability to meet external obligations amid a volatile global economy.
“Building gold reserves is a deliberate strategy to hedge against market turbulence while reducing overreliance on foreign currencies,” a senior central bank official told The High Street Journal.
Strategic Play
Gold has become a cornerstone of the Bank of Ghana’s reserve management, reflecting the central bank’s push to diversify assets while enhancing currency resilience.
The record haul underscores the institution’s long-term bet that hard assets like gold remain a safer hedge in a world rattled by inflation, debt concerns, and currency swings.
