Teboho Mokoena converted a VAR-awarded spot kick in the 83rd minute as South Africa bounced back from their opening loss to secure a point against a resilient Czech side in Atlanta.
South Africa salvaged a vital 1-1 draw against Czechia in their Group A Matchday 2 clash at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, as Teboho Mokoena converted a controversial VAR penalty to cancel out Michal Sadílek’s record-fast opener.
Czechia stunned the crowd in the sixth minute when Sadílek latched onto an intelligent assist from Alexandr Sojka to fire a clinical header past South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. The goal stands as the fastest scored at the 2026 World Cup so far.

South Africa dominated possession with 61 percent but struggled to penetrate Czechia’s rigid low block, often settling for inefficient long-range efforts. The match turned in the 81st minute when Thapelo Maseko’s powerful effort struck the arm of Czech substitute Pavel Šulc. Despite Šulc’s arm being completely tucked against his torso, American referee Tori Penso awarded a highly controversial penalty after a VAR review.
Under immense pressure, Mokoena stepped up in the 83rd minute and sent goalkeeper Matěj Kovář the wrong way, smashing the ball into the bottom corner to level the score.
Deep into seven minutes of added time, South Africa nearly snatched a win when Orlando Pirates prodigy Relebohile Mofokeng and Evidence Makgopa both forced spectacular diving saves out of Kovář, but the Czech goalkeeper held firm.
Czechia finished with 12 shots, three on target, while South Africa managed 17 shots, five on target. South African passing accuracy stood at 90 percent compared to Czechia’s 82 percent.
According to a report by Accra Street Journal, South Africa successfully protected an iconic piece of football history, maintaining their record of never losing back-to-back matches in a single World Cup edition. The match was the second competitive tie between the senior sides, duplicating their 2-2 draw from the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup.
Despite his heroics, Mokoena picked up a crucial yellow card and will be officially suspended for South Africa’s final group match against South Korea. The draw leaves both nations tied on one point at the bottom of Group A, keeping knockout and third-place wildcard spots open heading into the final matchday.
