Liverpool began their title defense in grand style, edging past Bournemouth 4–2 in a breath-taking opener at Anfield. The Reds were fired up with emotion—paying tribute to the late Diogo Jota and his brother with Jota’s No. 20 mosaic and a heartfelt moment of silence. The atmosphere was thick with memory, and the players responded in kind.

New signing Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring in the first half, converting with composure. That was followed by Cody Gakpo doubling the lead early in the second. Liverpool looked in control—until Antoine Semenyo, battling racial abuse during the match, produced a brilliant brace to equalize and keep Bournemouth hopes alive.

But Liverpool’s late game heroics made the real difference. Federico Chiesa, on as a substitute, struck from close range in the 88th minute, placing a stunning finish in the bottom corner. Then, in the dying minutes, Mohamed Salah sealed the win with a clinical goal—celebrating with Jota’s iconic “Baby Shark” gesture that sparked a wave of emotion around Anfield.

The match was not without its controversies. A clear handball by Bournemouth’s Marco Senesi was controversially overlooked by VAR—drawing criticism from pundits including Jamie Carragher, who accused the review team of misleading the referee.

This was the perfect blend of drama, tribute, and title-winning character. Liverpool will hope the emotions from Jota’s memory fuel more inspired performances this season.
