South Africa salvaged a vital 1-1 draw against Czechia in their Group A Matchday 2 clash at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, as Teboho Mokoena converted a controversial VAR penalty to cancel out Michal Sadílek’s record-fast opener.
Czechia stunned the crowd in the sixth minute when Sadílek latched onto an intelligent assist from Alexandr Sojka to fire a clinical header past South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. The goal stands as the fastest scored at the 2026 World Cup so far.

South Africa dominated possession with 61 percent but struggled to penetrate Czechia’s rigid low block, often settling for inefficient long-range efforts. The match turned in the 81st minute when Thapelo Maseko’s powerful effort struck the arm of Czech substitute Pavel Šulc. Despite Šulc’s arm being completely tucked against his torso, American referee Tori Penso awarded a highly controversial penalty after a VAR review.
