Germany Captain Giulia Gwinn Ruled Out of Euro 2025 After Knee Injury Against Poland

Germany’s UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 campaign has suffered a significant blow as captain Giulia Gwinn has been ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to a ligament injury, the German Football Federation (DFB) confirmed on Saturday.

Gwinn, 26, sustained the injury during Germany’s 2-0 victory over Poland on Friday in St Gallen, exiting the match in the 40th minute following a defensive challenge against Poland striker Ewa Pajor.

Although she briefly attempted to continue, Gwinn was later seen in tears as she left the pitch, comforted by teammate Lea Schüller, who went on to score in the second half.

“The captain of the German women’s national team suffered a ligament injury in her left knee… she is expected to be out for several weeks,” the DFB stated.

The setback is especially painful given Gwinn’s history with serious injuries—she has previously endured ACL tears in both knees, including one that caused her to miss the 2023 Women’s World Cup.

Germany, silver medalists at Euro 2022 and bronze medalists at the Paris 2024 Olympics, are widely considered among the favorites for the Euro 2025 title alongside England and Spain.

Gwinn’s absence will be a major test of the squad’s depth as they continue their group stage matches without their leader on the pitch.
