Ghana’s Golden Arms showcased their strength once again at the 14th African Armwrestling Championships in Abuja, Nigeria, with an impressive medal tally over two intense days of competition.
As reigning champions, the Ghanaian team bagged a total of 55 medals, including 26 gold, 20 silver, and nine bronze, finishing third behind Benin and host nation Nigeria. With over 400 athletes from 20 African countries competing, Ghana’s rising dominance in the sport was evident.

Leading the way for Ghana were star athletes Grace Mintah, Mabel Yeboah, and Daniel Acquah, each securing an impressive four gold medals. Their exceptional performances highlighted the strength and talent within the Ghanaian team, earning high praise from the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams.

“This achievement is not a one-off success. It represents consistent grassroots development, disciplined athlete training, and meaningful collaboration between the public and private sectors. Armwrestling has truly become a source of national pride,” he stated.

The Abuja championships served as vital preparation for the upcoming African Games, where Ghana hopes to exceed its impressive 41-medal haul from the Accra 2023 edition. Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) President Charles Osei-Asibey expressed immense pride in the team’s determination and success.
“Winning twenty-six gold medals is an extraordinary achievement. We never disappoint,” he told Graphic Sports from Abuja. “Considering the challenges the team faced, I can confidently say this is Ghana’s best-performing national team. We are incredibly thankful to everyone who supported us,” he added.
Looking forward to the 2027 African Games, Mr. Osei-Asibey urged all Ghanaians to keep supporting the armwrestling team. “Our focus is now on 2027, and we appeal to the nation to continue backing us. As a federation, we are overjoyed by our athletes’ performance. Thank you, Ghana!” he said, emphasizing the federation’s mission to build on their success and maintain their dominance in Africa.

With medals flowing and momentum firmly on their side, Ghana’s armwrestling juggernaut is steadily cementing its place as a powerhouse in African sports. Their continuous rise reflects not only individual talent but also the fruits of strategic investment and national pride, promising an exciting future for the Golden Arms on the international stage.
