Early Life and Education

Born in 1974, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah began his education at Pope John Senior High School & Minor Seminary in Koforidua. He earned a medical degree from the University of Ghana Medical School and completed rotations at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis. Furthering his expertise, he obtained a Master’s in Health Policy Planning & Financing from the London School of Economics and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine

In university, he led the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) and the Federation of Ghana Medical Students Association (FGMSA), demonstrating early leadership and civic engagement

Public Service & Medical Contributions

In 2001 as reported by Accra Street Journal, Omane Boamah served on the medical rescue team responding to Ghana’s stadium disaster. Political Journey

Deputy Ministerial Roles (2009–2013)

Under President Atta-Mills, he served as Deputy Minister for Environment, Science & Technology, chairing investigations into environmental pollution by major corporations like KOSMOS Energy and Newmont Ghana. Later, he became Deputy Minister for Youth and Sports, coordinating Ghana’s participation in AFCON 2013 as earlier reported by Accra Sports News

Communications Minister & Presidential Spokesperson (2013–2017)

Appointed in February 2013 by President Mahama, Dr. Omane Boamah advanced digital reform as reportd by SKB Journal. He oversaw Ghana’s 4G LTE rollout, established the National Computer Emergency Response Team, and initiated a national child online protection framework. By August 2014, he had become Presidential Spokesperson, a role he held until 2017

Defence Minister: Reform & Vision (2025)

In January 2025, President Mahama nominated him as Minister for Defence, confirmed later that month by Parliament. His tenure began in February 2025 and ended abruptly with his death on August 6, 2025

Shortly after assuming office, he exposed GH¢3.79 billion in hidden defence debts, launched a recruitment plan for 12,000 new troops, and initiated welfare reforms including housing for 17,000 service members. He also sought a €50 million security aid package from EU partners to modernize Ghana’s arsenals .

Other institutional priorities included strategic enforcement of illegal mining laws (“galamsey” cleanup) with stronger Defence Intelligence–Police cooperation

Tragic End and National Mourning

On August 6, 2025, Dr. Omane Boamah died in a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter crash near Adansi in the Ashanti Region as he traveled to Obuasi for a mining policy meeting. All eight onboard were killed, including two sitting ministers—Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed. The crash triggered national mourning, with flags lowered and significant tributes across Ghana’s political spectrum

Legacy & Impact

Dr. Omane Boamah is remembered as a rare blend of medical expertise, policy insight, and political acumen. His reforms at communications and defence ministries emphasized accountability, technology, institution-building—and above all, service.

His sudden death at the peak of a transformative tenure leaves a legacy defined by national ambition and the promise of institutional change.
