Spurs looked set to secure the trophy in their first competitive match under new coach Thomas Frank, taking a 2-0 lead shortly after halftime at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy. Micky van de Ven scored the opener for last season’s Europa League champions in the 39th minute, with Cristian Romero adding a second just three minutes into the second half.
PSG were saved by two substitutes, with Lee Kang-in scoring in the 85th minute and Goncalo Ramos heading in the equalizer four minutes into injury time. This led to a penalty shoot-out, which got off to a rough start for PSG as Vitinha missed their first attempt.
Paris’s new goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier pulled off a key save against Van de Ven, and after Mathys Tel missed his shot, Nuno Mendes stepped up to score the winning penalty for PSG. Although Dominic Solanke, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Pedro Porro nailed their penalties for Spurs, it wasn’t enough. Ramos, Ousmane Dembele, and Lee all delivered for PSG before Mendes clinched the win.
