Ghana’s Black Queens secured a historic third-place finish at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after edging out South Africa in a nerve-racking penalty shootout.
After 90 minutes of intense action ended 1-1, the Queens held their nerve to win 4-3 on penalties — earning Ghana its fourth bronze medal in WAFCON history and a record prize purse of $350,000.

Elsewhere, Nigeria’s Super Falcons proved once again why they’re Africa’s queens of the game — lifting their 10th WAFCON title in thrilling fashion. A gripping 3-2 comeback win over host nation Morocco secured the crown, along with a record-breaking $1 million in prize money.
The 2024 edition of WAFCON also marked a turning point in the growth of women’s football on the continent. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) increased the total prize pool by 45%, signaling deeper commitment to improving conditions for female footballers, coaches, and technical staff.
