Egypt made history on Friday, securing their first-ever passage into the World Cup knockout stage after a dramatic 1-1 draw with Iran at Seattle Stadium, while an unbeaten Iran squad faced an agonizing wait to see if they would sneak through as one of the best third-placed teams.
Egypt broke the deadlock early in the 5th minute. Trezeguet laid off a pass to Mahmoud Saber, whose shot deflected through a sea of bodies to beat Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand. Iran responded immediately when Mohamed Abdelmonem fouled Mehdi Taremi in the box, but Egypt’s young keeper Mostafa Shobeir made a spectacular diving save to deny Taremi from the spot.

While Abdelmonem was receiving medical attention on the touchline, Milad Mohammadi’s parried shot fell to Ramin Rezaeian, who smashed the ball in from a tight angle to equalize in the 14th minute. Egyptian icon Mohamed Salah was forced off with a minor injury early in the second half, heavily blunting the Pharaohs’ attacking edge.
Deep in stoppage time, Shojae Khalilzadeh fired a loose ball into the roof of the net, sparking wild Iranian celebrations. However, a lengthy VAR review broke Iranian hearts by ruling the goal out for a marginal offside. In the dying seconds, Saeid Ezatolahi connected with a cross from six yards out, only to watch his shot rattle off the crossbar.
Egypt finished with 14 shots, three on target, while Iran managed 12 shots, three on target. Egyptian possession stood at 61 percent compared to Iran’s 39 percent.
According to a report by Accra Street Journal, Iran became just the third Asian country in history to finish a World Cup group stage undefeated, but because Belgium thrashed New Zealand 5-1 simultaneously, Iran dropped to third place. Egypt will face Australia in the Round of 32 in Dallas.
