Switzerland defeated Canada 2-1 at BC Place in Vancouver on Tuesday to officially capture the top spot in Group B, while the co-hosts still made history by advancing to the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their men’s program history.
After a tense, scoreless first half heavily dominated by Swiss possession, Switzerland caught Canada napping just 46 seconds into the second half. Johan Manzambi escaped down the flank to square an easy low cross for Rubén Vargas, who swept it home.

Manzambi turned from provider to goalscorer in the 56th minute. Following spectacular hold-up play by Breel Embolo, Manzambi rifled a shot that squeezed right past Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau.
Facing a 2-0 deficit, Canada coach Jesse Marsch threw on substitutes, introducing Stephen Eustáquio and Promise David. Promise David immediately electrified the home crowd in the 75th minute with a clinical goal, but Canada squandered multiple close chances in the final stages.
Switzerland finished with six shots, four on target, while Canada managed 13 shots, seven on target. Swiss passing accuracy stood at 84 percent compared to Canada’s 80 percent.
According to a report by Accra Street Journal, the result means Canada finishes second in Group B and will travel to Los Angeles for their Round of 32 clash, missing out on staying in Vancouver. Switzerland advance to the knockout stage as group winners, securing their place in the Round of 32 with seven points.
